Pozzolan Cement...

looking around for some info I found this very interesting material used in gardens, is called pozzolanic cement. Is mainly a combination of sand and cement and is used in areas planted with trees. What caught my attention was not only that is handicap accessible if installed well, but also that this material is not as permanet as permiable concrete .. it can be easily modified by the actual user, so in any case that they need to relocate the planting pots for the handicap or want to change the paths in the future and create more planting areas. This material allows for easy modifiable spaces and at the same time is durable. A bag of 55 lb. can come to be about 15-20$ dollars (but dont quote me on that, I am comparing cement prices from home depot, we have to still verify), this might be a cheaper and easier to install option we can have if permeable concrete falls out of our budget.  bellow some more info and images of how it works:

To be posted latest by tonight for some fedback!

Items bellow are due tonight!!!

- section detail of the wall (Elle)
- lattice sketch with 2 possible material configurations (Nicole)
- diagram of the new storage location, organize drop box (Perla)
- Meeting notes (Nick)

Please post to receive feedback.

Storage Shed Relocation Diagram

Following up on our conversation with Penny please see diagram bellow:

During the teams conversation Friday, after the meeting with the client, we mainly disscuss shape, size of shed 11'x14', and the possible handicap accesible paths. Above some idea of a path that can use the existing coble stone to decorate and define the different paths.

There were some questions as to how does permeable concrete works. Please see bellow a section detail

This is still under discussion, Todd wanted us to look into Katsura Palace in Japan. So we still have not made a decision on the material for the handicap accessible area.

Bellow I attached some images of what I found online from searching Katsura Palace http://picasaweb.google.com/christopher.s.wils/JAPANJune2009GardensAndNature#

Todd please notify if this is what you were refering to.

This is up for discussion.

You must be able to answer the following questions convincingly next week:

How will you handle the electrical and water supplies and meters?
A water collector will be placed in the right side of the shed as well as the electrical meter, if possible. The question that we had was the approximate cost of relocating the electrical meter. and if not able to relocate can we box it and leave it were it is, or even move it a little bit to the left of where it is now.

Is the existing lattice shed (plant shed) being moved or is your plan to build a new one? (I suggest that we propose a new structure, but you will need a design!)
We were thinking of the same lattice shed, but just raising it, and making it face the sitting area.

Do you enter the garden through the shed?
No, people enter the garden through the ramp.

Is that a new fence between the handicapped accessible area & garden?
No fence, that area is the material that is going to be poured in order to make it handicap accessible.

What is the material for the handicapped accessible area? Concrete? Brick pavers? Concrete pavers? Stone dust?
Permeable paving, bellow what it looks like and some websites with information about this material. The method of paving allows flow of water through it, so prevents water puddles from happening. This system also prevents the concrete from cracking, is also maintenance free, easy to install, resistant to chemicals, and environmentally friendly.

http://www.mypaverdriveway.com/environmental.cfm

How they get the snow blower out? Do they use the single swing door at the HP access area?
They can use the double sliding doors.

How would this work if the existing ramp was to remain but the shed was moved to the proposed location?
The circulation of the space will suffer. The reason we liked this idea was because the circulation of the space is very clear and things are not conflicting with each other, as of right now.

Where did the sliding barn doors go? If you keep the swing doors you might want to consider moving off center to avoid conflict w/ the planting bed.
My mistake, they were supposed to be there, please see new diagram.

What happens too or how do you resolve the trellis along the backwall of the upper area? Does it turn and create a gateway / opening from the top of the ramp to the brick patio?
We haven't talked about this much but we feel like it will stay the same.

How long is the ramp? 1:12 slope, so if the elevation change is 30" it = a 30' ramp. Longest run without at level landing is 30'. You need to be able to definitely answer the elevation change and how it affects the length of the new ramp. If you go with a slope of 1:20 then you need a ramp 50' long with a 4' level landing, but you can remove the railings.
the slope is 1:12. so far is a 2 feet tall and 24 inches long ramp.

Diagram for review!

Before

After

The diagram above descrives the ideas we talked about today. The latice shed rotates and moves closer to the sitting area. The Storage shed moves closer to the planting beds and the handicap planting beds are behind the latice. The one thing we considered was having two possible entrances to the shed. One for the handicap people and the other for the people that will work in the garden, we also thought this will provide an easier circulation pattern.

This diagram is up for discussion! so comment away!

Yes we need to raise the Shed and yes the budget is five digits!

Todd
You have have stated the floor level well.  In raising the floor elevation, we need to make a clear and convincing proposal for doing so that relates to elevations beyond the shed itself. See you all Friday.
If any of you have time, see if there are images of the Provincetown Art Association Museum.  Some of the wall details are very interesting.
